World Baseball Classic

This month the first World Baseball Classic is being held. 16 teams from around the world are competing in an international baseball tournament. Among these teams are the traditional baseball powerhouses like the United States, Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, but there are also countries competing that one would not usually think of as baseball countries. Italy is one of these countries. Italy, one of the two european teams (the other being the Netherlands) was put into a pool with Australia, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. Italy played competitively with these nations, beating Australia 10-0 but losing their other two games. All in all it was a good showing for Italy and showing that baseball is definitely on the rise in the country.

How long do you have to live in Italy to establish residency and play for the Italian team? Any idea?

I have no idea. I would guess you have to be a citizen, but then again MLB players like Mike Piazza who have been in America for years now played for the team, so it is a good question. I'll check on it and see what I can find out.

ok, so you can play for a naitonal team (at least in the world baseball classic) if... the player is a citizen of the nation, or is eligible to be a citizen and hold a passport with respect to the laws of the nation he wishes to play for. in this case, the player or team must form a petition to allow the player to play. or,if the player is a permanent legal resident of the nation, or if the player was born in the country, or if a parent is a citizen of the nation, or if at least on parent was born in the nation. so, those are the only requirements- a player just has to meet one of them, and could be eligible to play for multiple teams, but would have to choose which team to play for.
